CITY OF ITHACA PUBLIC ART COMMISSION MURAL/STREET ART PROGRAM

The Public Art Commission (PAC) seeks proposals from artists or organizations for site-specific murals that will become part of the city-wide public art mural initiative. The theme is open, but proposed installations should be thoughtful of the community in

which they are being placed.

Their goal is to build an inventory of potential murals that are preapproved for creation subject to the provision of funding through grants, private donations, and community fund-raising.

PAC will utilize this inventory to establish partnerships between artists, property owners, the City, County, and funding agencies for the creation of murals and other street art for the beautification of Ithaca's public spaces.

Dear Roger,

While the grasshopper in all of us would like to cling to the waning days of summer, the ominous approach of Labor Day means it's time for many in our community to find their inner ant and return to the daily grind.

With that in mind, this issue of the ArtsLetter has plenty of news on grant opportunities, upcoming workshops and other chances for artists, arts organizations, and their patrons to get down to business.  Feel free to use these listings and our collection of links to plan for an industrious autumn. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of summer!

 Cheers,

Brett Bossard, Executive Director

Ben Altman, "False Memory Mechanism",

through September 30

"False Memory Mechanism" an exhibit by local artist Ben Altman, is an installation using composite panoramas of a wedding, a funeral reception, a going-away party, dinner with long-lost cousins, and a graduation. Ben memorializes these rites of passage with large hand-made prints of photographs created by incomplete frame advances and accidental double exposures. The pieces, mounted using a complicated suspension system, explore how the medium becomes the memory.
